The State of SEO

See the original post on RyanAndElliott.com!

Before I had decided to title this post, ‘The State of SEO,’ I had originally titled it ‘Is SEO Dying?’ Cool huh? Actually, I had written a 800 word post describing why I thought SEO was on the verge of collapse within the industry and within online marketing in general. I scratched that idea out of fear of backlash from my fellow SEO die-hards out there. Maybe someday I’ll post it (after the fact of course, and then look like a complete idiot).

Instead, ‘The State of SEO’ has become my first entry on RyanAndElliott.com. As I’ve been fidgeting around with my own blog, as well as with work at my actual job, Elliott finally pushed me to create something, so here it is.

What is the State of SEO as we know it?

In my most honest and most deepest opinion, SEO is changing dramatically. There was a time when you could say that for any given company or any ‘New Media’ company out there, SEO was a valid career path. Is this the case now? Maybe, but I don’t think it should be….

I Find Most YouTube Comments…

to be written by the dummys in the world.

I’ve long held the belief that people who post comments on videos on YouTube are slightly dumber then the average person. Or maybe a lot dumber, I think it depends on the video. Yeah, I’ve commented a few times on videos, and I can sometimes see the urge to really express my soulfelt opinion, but then I realize, “whats the benefit?” Usually, if I say something, it is because I want to correct another comment where the person may not have known 100% of their facts. I’ll never say something like, “Wow!”, or “Haha” or “LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.” I’ll save those for you know who.

YouTube loves YouTube comments though. Maybe not, I’m merely guessing, but giving people the option to hate or love something, allows everyone and their dog to see the full benefit of putting something up on YouTube. It is a traffic generator! Remember when Google admitted to not knowing how to monetize YouTube?… Have you seen it lately? I think they may have figured something out, or at least are close. And how do we promote repeat visitors. Hell, never mind, that is already in the bag.

YTMonet

So traffic generation… wait a minute, lets go back to our stupid commentors. Take a look at some cool and interesting videos on YouTube. Chances are, those videos you thought were cool and interesting, are not cool and interesting to me. That being said, you’ve now uncovered the true greatness that is a YouTube search. Let me tell you the reasons why a YouTube search is better then a Google search.

  1. Results are in picture format

Yeah, thats pretty much it. If you are looking for something in YouTube, you probably already know what it is, and what it will look like. Its a damn video! (Now I realize there are Rick Roll’d videos out there, and spam crap, but lets just forget about that stuff for the time being) Search in YouTube is pretty efficient, so I personally have to venture a guess and say that the people who click on videos and realize that the video they clicked on is not what they were looking for… are slightly more stupid then the average user. Even more so, people who click on videos because they know they’re going to hate it, but want to watch it anyway… don’t you have something better to do?

Which brings me to the point in why we have idiotic YouTube comments. If there is something you like and you watch it, and you’ve seen someone else write a comment about why they don’t like it, you naturally are going to have the urge to explain why they are wrong. Most of the time, these conflict comments are sparse (remember YouTube search… we’ve weeded out the non-dummys). But the ones who want to hate, have made it in. Deng it!

Language below.. sorry.

YTCommentDo you see sorta what I mean. This video by so and so, has these kind of comments, however, the video still has a rating of 4 stars. There are WAY more people who love this chick then people who just want to come on and say they hate her. Still, they’re willing to go on a board and tell everyone. Maybe they just want the attention. I dunno.

So, to make a long story short, if you find the need to make a comment on YouTube because you don’t like a particular video, ask yourself this..”Why am I here in the first place? Am I just being a hater for no reason?” And maybe you can get a few other people to calm their jets as well. Unless you’re just looking for attention, in that case, get a life.

Do you want to test out YouTube’s naturally excellent search? Do any YouTube search, and compare the number of videos with 4 or more stars to those with 2 or less, heck 3 or less! People know what they are looking for and like what they are looking for. No guesswork.. usually.

Call Recording On

Recently, I was able to set up my own Google Voice number! Whoot! Actually, me friend Elliott and I were looking for a way to record our calls as kind of a cool way to make podcasts… what do you think of our test?
Call Recording On – The Test, August 6, 2009 – 9:13am

Cool huh?

Any ways, check www.RyanAndElliott.com in the next few days for the beginning of our new and improved audio only podcast… we had to do it that way since he’s in Seattle and I’m in Phoenix. We might one day go back to video, but this is just easier for the time being.

Peace!

Trina Thompson – This is a Joke Right?

Recently, thanks to a Facebook wall post made by one of my good friends, I stumbled upon this great article in regards to a recent alumna who is suing her school because she has not yet found a job. I’ll let you go and read the story… did you read it? Alright, good.

After reading the article I went about and did a Google search for Trina Thompson. After finding a few more news article results, I decided to take my search efforts to Facebook. Yeah I know what you’re thinking… but lo and behold, I found the ‘Support Trina Thompson’ Facebook Group Page!  Oh shit, this is going to be good. Take a gander below….

Alright, so don’t get me wrong, I am supportive of people in need. Everyone deserves a chance at success and happiness. The way you individually measure success and happiness… you can decide upon yourself. But this to me just boggles my mind. Let me first explain a few of my first thoughts:

  • Going to college does not guarantee a job, especially with a GPA of 2.7.
  • Going to college offers you an education… and a degree.
  • If she wants to sue a college for the total cost of her degree.. well that is one thing.. if she succeeds in winning the case, well then she better come out of there with absolutely no degree and no college credits to her name. Do you think that would change her mind? Maybe not, she’s not a smart person.
  • The economy.
  • If going to college was such a burden on your life, maybe you should have taken a broader look at the severity of your education at the time. Yes it is a major expense, albeit important one, but your livelihood in the here and now is possibly a little more important.

Okay, so those are just a few of my first thoughts on the whole thing. Now in regards to the Facebook group… did you look at the image? Did you happen to see the ‘Related Groups’ section?

  • MAFIA WARS OFFICERS
  • Mafia Wars Fast Add & +5 GODFATHER Points 1,000,000,000 MEMBERS!
  • MAFIA Wars…… ADD 200+ Members in 60 minutes, Guaranteed!
  • Masters of Mafia Wars ( +50 reward point weekly

Okay, so am I out of line in saying this is a little hilarious? When bands of Mafia Wars players get together… shit is going to hit the fan. Oh and Cathy Perez?…. ‘I AM GOING THROUGH THE SAME PROBLEM…’ really? Well damnit… lets get you an attorney! Cathy then goes on to say ‘I WANT TO SUE THIS SCHOOL, AND I HOPE IT CLOSES ITS DOORS FOREVER…’ Can these people be serious? Oh man… it really makes me want to cry!

I understand these are hard times. The economy has tanked… hopefully not any more, and unemployment rates are high. But also realize, its not just you, its everyone. So while you might think you are qualified with no experience, and a 2.6 GPA, chances are there are others out there who are just as if not more experienced. Sometimes you need to bite the bullet, take a job you are over qualified for for the time being while you search for your career. It is not the easiest path to follow, but it is better then making yourself look like a fool.
