How Do YOU Think I Should Solve My Problem?
A week or so ago, I spotted a tweet from a friend discussing a new book he had recently found that was free for a limited time for e-readers. While I had never heard of the author, the topic of the book seemed pretty straight forward and pretty interesting actually. In a nutshell, it was a look at how entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, and other creatively motivated souls often see their projects fizzle out because they simple don’t have the tenacity or passion to continue on. I feel this is a constant struggle for me personally, so I went ahead and downloaded the book.
To be perfectly honest, and while I only read about three quarters of the thing, this book was pure crap. In between messages of “You will run into obstacles… face them!… Plan out your project… but don’t plan it out and go by the seat of your pants,” there was the all too frequnt “You can do it, You can do it, You can do it!!!! It’s your passion!” While I understand there are many great and successful entrepreneurs and creative folk who’ve found success, a part of me thinks that they’d laugh at this kind of poop. But you know.. I guess it’s the guy who wrote this who’s getting the last laugh right?
I’ve found that today, with every man woman and child with their own business idea or venture, the level of professionalism… wait.. let me say the degree of knowledge most Subject Matter Experts possess today, is laughable compared to 10 or 15 years ago. A part of it could be the relative ‘newness’ that these ideas consume, but for someone who is constantly studying and trying to understand evolving technologies in the first place… it’s kind of frustrating. When after reading a book you can honestly say to yourself… I could write this load of BS… you have to wonder if you’re not in the right business.
