My Fear of Change
I believe that one of the biggest issues with people throughout time is the underlying fear of change. After the last election when President Barack Obama focused his campaign on “Change” the idea of sedentary circumstances (and I don’t even know if that makes sense logically) has come to be a bad thing. We are all so ingrained in our daily lives, eating, sleeping, working day in and day out, that by adding elements of change or chance, we often are torn between what we know, versus what may come. This of course is called risk.
But that’s not to say that risk is bad. In many cases, and I hope this is the case far more than otherwise, risk can be measured as an inconsequential result. Say you must choose between leaving your job, and taking a new job with similar benefits. While many of you may have been in this kind of situation, what was it that finally made you commit to one idea over the other? Did if result in a change? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that in this particular kind of situation, most people did NOT take a risk. Risk is beneficial only when the results of the change outweigh the results of not changing. That is unless you have been susceptible to marketing and promotion.
Brands the world over rely on people’s desire to change. Not only are they able to enforce need, but they do so in a way that often makes our sedentary choices, seem illogical. From dropped calls, to hand-cut fries, to ‘how did you ever survive without your iPad,’ as you look at the artifacts in your house, or hold your phone, computer, or Wendy’s value meal, take a moment and think to yourself… did my risk of buying into these products pay off?
This is the main reason why I am somewhat afraid of change. When I think about risk or the repercussions of my ideas, theories around fate often get pulled into the conversation. I won’t do that here, but can you see why? At the end of the day, when all we want is change and a fresh start, the impact it really has on our lives is questionable. New jobs, new homes, getting married, having children, etc… they all have mounting risks associated with them, but after the fact and as soon as its done, can you say to yourself that you are who you are without any of them?
